Outdoor Lighting Installation

If you’re even thinking about lighting solutions for your Houston landscape, chances are you’ve already put a great deal of effort into your yard. You probably have lots of beautiful flowers and foliage, maybe even a few outdoor decor items like a fountain or yard art. You probably made sure the trees of your yard perfectly add shadow, color, and light right where you want it. Chances are you’ve already created a lovely exterior for your home. There’s just one thing missing to make it sparkle and that’s landscape lighting.

Why Landscape Lighting?

The first answer would be “Why not?” You’ve already invested a great deal of time and money to get the perfect outdoors. But, there are a few reasons why you want to go the extra mile.

Lighting Expands Your Houston Home.

Many Houston homeowners extend their living and entertaining space outdoors. Lighting your landscape will make it even more functional. And you can decide what you want out of your backyard.

  • Do you want a really great area to entertain friends and family?
  • Do you want a quiet, serene place to meditate?
  • Or, maybe you want an area that’s dedicated just to the kids?

Whatever you want out of your landscape, lighting is the touch you just can’t overlook.

Lighting Makes it All Come Together.

If you’re going to spend time in your backyard at night, you want to be able to take it all in. Whether it’s the water reflecting off your pool under the moonlight, or the garden you’ve worked on several seasons that are bursting with color. No doubt, you want to enjoy it. And you probably want to show it all off to your guests too. What fun is hosting a party if everyone’s clustered in one place because the lighting isn’t right? Landscape lighting is the answer. It makes it all come together beautifully, just how you always envisioned it.

If You’re Going to Entertain Outdoors, Don’t Neglect Safety.

Unfortunately, an improperly lit landscape can cause accidents. And, it’s so easy to prevent injuries with just a few focus areas of light, whether it’s around walkways, the pool, steps, or areas that are simply too dark. Lighting will also make your home less inviting to criminals while making it more inviting for you and your family.

Ambiance, Ambiance, Ambiance

Lighting is the missing ingredient that will make your landscape sparkle. It’ll give your outdoor living space that final touch of ambiance and sophistication. At the same time, it offers a cozy, inviting atmosphere that’s great to retreat to after a long day’s work or during the weekend. A perfectly lit outdoors is the best place to be when you’re at home.

Lighting also makes the perfect ambiance for your family for get-togethers and your loved one for a romantic evening.

Adds Safety and Security

Outdoor will guide your family and guests and prevent possible injuries from slipping, falling or bumping. Lighting your backyard will also give thieves second thoughts in breaking in. Guests will also feel more comfortable and secured when your outdoors are well-lit. Creating a beautiful environment is the goal of every homeowner. You try to plan every detail to create the space that you want. The use of special types of lighting is one of the techniques to add more style to your home. Accent lighting is a great solution to make your home more attractive. It is used to focus on lighting in areas or objects that you want to highlight or showcase. Accent lights provide more visual interest to any area. If you are looking to add more drama or you want to create a certain ambiance, accent lighting Florida accent lighting Tampa Bay is something you should look into. Picking out the right type of accent lighting is essential in order to achieve the perfect set up unique to your space and set according to your needs, desires, and aesthetics. Here are some of the essential things you need to know to help you decide what type of accent lighting in Florida accent lighting in Tampa Bay is ideal for your home.

Wall lights and sconces A sconce is a type of lighting fixture that is affixed to the wall — the wall is used as support, and the light is typical, though not always, directed upwards. Traditionally, sconces are mostly decorative and serve as general room lighting. Wall lights have more modern fittings, and a glass casing usually covers the light source. Wall lights and sconces can be used both indoors and outdoors. They are often used in corridors, hallways, and pathways as a point of interest and to provide illumination.

Track lights Track lighting is a modern method used when light fixtures are attached to a tracking device, and their position can be customized depending on where individual lights are desired to be focused. Individual light fittings can be independently controlled. Tracks are usually mounted on walls, ceiling, rafters, and beams. Track lights are often used throughout the house, especially in the living room, kitchen, dining room, and dens to give focal points of each room the right amount of light.

Undercabinet lighting This type of lighting is not just accent lighting but also works as task lights because they are typically used in specific areas such as the kitchen and workbenches in shops to give more focused lighting in spaces that need more direct illumination. These lights can be considered low profile because you can only see the light but not the fixtures.

Landscape lighting These accent lights are great to use outdoors to show off the features of the outside of your home and to level up the atmosphere of your space. They are often used to showcase prized architectural details such as gazebos, trellis, decks, lanais, fountains, and pools at night. Landscape lighting is also mainly used to light up pathways in the dark for safety and also for the security of your property.

Inspiring Landscape

In this installment, we are going to focus on the process of planning a truly inspiring landscape. Many times, we have some idea of what we want to do with our homes and property. Perhaps we start a scrapbook and pull ideas from various print magazines like Home & Décor Ideas or Florida Design Magazine. Something to help visualize the inspiring landscape you are going for. If you are a little bit more technologically inclined, websites like Pinterest can be a great way to save and reflect on design ideas for your outdoor living space. The idea is to invest some time thinking about what you want your lifestyle to look like. How are you going to invest in your outdoor spaces to manifest that lifestyle? When it’s completed, it will be a truly inspiring landscape for you, along with your friends and family to enjoy.

Design Components

Now it’s time to consider the design components of your oasis. There are a lot of truly inspiring works to be considered. Bringing in various textures will compliment your home’s architecture. Custom water features will deliver the soothing sound of a mountain stream or tropical waterfall. Design Components like firepits and outdoor kitchens will deliver practical and visual excitement and purpose. Hardscapes like those designed and installed by of Boca Raton and exotic granite from our friend May-ling Santeliz at PrimeStones in West Palm Beach offer amazing natural beauty.

Of course, the installation and maintenance of a quality pool is a must have in Florida. A skilled landscape architect will bring in layers of tropical foliage and varieties of palms to really drive home the Caribbean feel. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the variety of design components, don’t be. This is going to be fun and exciting and when its complete you are going to enjoy years of Florida outdoor living! Of course, you will want to make sure that the ambiance of the scene is well experienced with great landscape lighting. That is where Illumination FL shines…bringing love, light and life to your evenings

Bringing It Together

It’s time to start bringing it together. So, once you have brainstormed, meditated and reflected you will likely have a scrapbook bulging at the seams. Think through the most important aspects of how you hope to enjoy your outdoor living. From the pool to the garden lighting, it is all going to come together.

Now, is a good time to talk with those who will be involved. A family meeting if you please, and designate an overall budget. Once you have an idea about how much you want to invest in your home improvement you will feel far more comfortable when it comes time to make actual purchase decisions. From your scrapbook, you will want to prioritize the projects and begin meeting with contractors, landscape architects and landscape lighting designers. As you are working on bringing it together, hiring a good team of contractors is important.

Read online reviews from other folks in your area that have worked with the various members of the team you will be putting together. Make sure that the companies you interview are licensed and insured. Do not hesitate to ask the questions that are important to you and if you don’t understand something, simply request clarification.

Now you’re bringing it together! You will have bids on the various projects, but when it comes to home improvement, the lowest price is rarely the alternative that you will want to go with. You need to think in terms of value. Consider the experience of the contractors, the quality and durability of materials and components that they use, the types of warranties that will be in place, the estimated costs of maintenance and then make wise choices regarding your new outdoor oasis.

To be continued…

Highlighting the outside of your house with well-placed lights can make your house to look great at night, as well as during the day. It will emphasize, or even create architectural interest and provide the best lighting for the tasks that need to be performed.

Here are examples of outdoor lighting features and the right ways to use them:

Path lights. The perfect front yard begins with a stylish pathway that draws you in. Many path lights are designed to look good but not to effectively light up a path. A great way to keep path lights low to the ground is to add LED strip lights. For a more traditional look use path lights with domes hide bulbs from view and direct light downward. This will reduce glare and put light where your feet need them most, right on the path.

Step lights. Some step lights shine light in all directions, including into your eyes. This makes it harder to see the steps and therefore more dangerous. A shielded newel-post deck lights do a much better job at directing light down onto the stairs and not into your eyes. Even better, linear LED strip lights under stair treads push light down onto the steps and keep the focus in the right place.

Lanterns. Avoid clear glass and visible candle-shaped bulbs to help reduce glare. Go for frosted shades and aim the fixtures downward so extra light hits the floor. Also consider adding dimmers or use low-wattage bulbs to set a welcoming mood.

Pendants. Pendants above the door should  avoid bare bulbs completely or use low-wattage bulbs and dimmers. Use translucent glass in fixtures, such as milk glass or amber mica. A highly shielded fixture will also work, especially if it directs light downward.

Spotlights. Direct spotlights at your home’s features, like brickwork, molding and eaves. This will provide light that helps us feel secure without making our guests feel unwelcome.

There are many good reasons to pay close attention to the lighting used at the front of your house. Nobody wants to be greeted by darkness when they reach home and pretty lights can highlight certain features of your house or garden.
